I have successfully taught my 7-month old Alexandrine parakeet, Bob, to say, “I’m not food. Don’t eat me.” Of course his speech will get clearer over time, but this brightened up my day and made it all seem a little bit better.

No, I didn’t name him after Bob Marley or some other pop cultural or historical figure. He became Bob ‘cause he’s always bobbed his head whenever he hears a tune. He’s always looked like a Bob to me. Hence, I present to you - Bob.

I hope this brings a smile to your face as it did to us.

Hmmm… What to teach Bob to say next. He picks up real fast. Any suggestions?

Being on a study leave from work translates to a need to tightly manage my finances. At the back of my mind, I know I have some money saved to spend and yet more often than not, I choose to hold back and prioritize. This means pretty much that I must stay away from the “wants” and stick to the “needs.”
As such, I decided to forego two particularly big events scheduled this month which I would have, in a heartbeat, chosen to spend on had I not been on study leave. There’s “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber” onstage at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the World Cup 2014 qualifying match between the Philippine and Sri Lankan football clubs at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
While at a family dinner last night, my best bud and sister-from-anotha-motha, Tina Araneta, messaged me, ”Dude, wanna watch the Azkals on Sunday? :) Ticket on us if you’re free.” I stared at my phone for a bit. Tin had asked me earlier on when the tickets were about to go on sale if I wanted to watch the game and I remember telling her that as much as I did, it just wasn’t a priority, and now here she is asking me if I wanted to go? After that brief moment of disbelief, of course I said yes!
Over dinner, I was seated to the left of my Auntie Lottie, who casually mentioned that she was going to watch the Andrew Lloyd Webber show on the night of Saturday with my Uncle Rene and some of their friends. To make conversation, I said that I had wanted to see the show. Auntie’s face lit up and she told me she would try to see if she could still get a ticket for me and that she would let me know today. Knowing that the show would have probably been sold out by this time, I didn’t expect anything, but just an hour or two ago, Auntie called me and told me she had a ticket for me. I was set to see the show!
From none-out-of-two to two-out-of-two, my weekend suddenly looks like it is going to be a weekend. Truly, the best things come when you allow them to just happen, when you least expect them to.
Thank you, Lord for the gifts of family and love!
